Project Manager and Logistics Officer
For 30+ years David has been involved in all aspects of the development and construction of real estate projects. He has led projects in a wide range of responsibilities, including land assembly, project design, general contracting and real estate management. His strength is project management from the bidding process through turnover. He prides himself on efficient project management of subcontractors through attention to possible scope gaps, critical path items and timely material procurement. As a principal of the company David is hands on, working on site and side by side with the project superintendent. David Founded Artisan General Contracting on the principle of delivering products to the market in an efficient, and cost-effective manner allowing development projects to be completed even in the most challenging environments.
Project Design and Compliance Officer
John has over 37 years of experience in the design and construction industry. John Earned his Bachelor of Architecture from Kansas State University in 1987 and became a licensed Architect in 1990. He began his career as an intern working for HNTB alongside Architects in both the commercial and sports venue practices who would go on to create some of the most significant architecture practices in the country including Populous, Ellerbe Becket and 360 Architecture. His valuable experience Led him to start his professional career with CDFM Architecture where he focused on both Corporate Office and Municipal Public Works Facilities. He grew through this practice to become an owner in the firm. Later with his leadership, CDFM merged with Heinlein Shrock Sterns to form the nationally recognized firm 360 Architecture, a practice within the National Sports Market and the local Kansas City Commercial Market. Through his passion for residential architecture, he developed his skill and knowledge in the mixed use multifamily commercial market planning significant complex developments including 51 Main and 51 Oak by developer VanTrust Real Estate. He has continued this expertise to include boutique mixed use commercial and residential developments InterUrban Lofts and The Lofts for Real Property Group. John’s vast experience in design and construction, specifically with respect to multifamily projects, makes him pivotal to Artisan General Contracting in the management of design professionals and code compliance.
Multi-Family Development Resource Officer
Hal Shapiro graduated from the University of Texas, Austin with a bachelors in Real Estate Finance and Urban Land Economics. In 1992 he Founded Real Property Group LLC, and he remains as the managing principal partner of the firm today. His developments have focused on urban, walkable multi-family and multi-use projects. His knowledge in multi-family development is an invaluable resource to Artisan General Contracting. He provides a unique developer’s perspective within the construction process. Hal has also served on several boards connected with downtown Overland Park, Kansas. Hal was a founding board member and past president of the InterUrban ArtHouse located at 80th and Conser. He served on its board from 2015 through 2019 and was deeply involved with its purchase of the Post Office property which now serves as its home. Hal has also been on the board of the Downtown Overland Park Partnership (DOPP) since 2015 and remains on its board and serves on its Executive Team today. In 2018 Hal began service on the Downtown Overland Park Business Improvement District Board and remains active on its board as well. Hal Recently Joined Artisan General Contracting to provide more value add in future projects with RPG and Artisan.
Project Superintendent
Jack has over 50 years in the construction Industry. In 1974 he was groomed as a part time laborer and carpenter at Cook & Southerland Construction Company, his father’s residential and commercial construction business. Jacks’ aptitude and love of construction led him to earn his bachelor’s degree in general business and a minor in Construction Science from Kansas State University. Upon graduation Jack helped lead (William R. Southerland) WRS Inc. as a Project Manager in residential and commercial projects before becoming a Partner in WRS and Son Builders in 1988. Jack would go on to successfully lead WRS and Sons until 1996 when he formed Jack Southerland Custom Homes. In 2011 he expanded his expertise in construction, bringing to market as a developer the well-known southern Johnson County, Kansas sub-division of River Ridge Farms. When Artisan General Contracting began the search for a project superintendent to help lead them in the multi-family market, Jack was the ideal leader they had in mind. Jack brings an abundance of project management and the level of oversight necessary to bring to market some of the areas newest and exciting multi-family developments.
